Story Title: “Uncle Bill”
By: Robert Shimer
Bill was my step Uncle. I did not know him very well. We really only once did anything together, which was to go squirrel hunting when my brother and I were very young. I remember him more from hearing him, his dad and my mother share stories of camping and hunting in Minnesota when my mother was young. He and his dad built a trailer in I believe 1949 and drove from Indianapolis to Fairbanks, Alaska and back on the Alcan Highway. I believe the car and traler were so beat up by the trip that they junked them both. I always dreamed of doing the same, and in 2008 my son and I drove a much improved road from Chicago to Fairbanks when my son enrolled in graduate school at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. At one point we came across a portion of the original road and I drove it even tho it was out of the way just so I could share that small experience with my step grandfather and uncle. He and his Dad instilled a love of camping in me and I have shared that with my two boys. Rest in Peace Uncle Bill

I have known Bill for as long as he has worked with Geupel DeMars and what a pleasure it has been. Bill never failed to pass my office without pausing to say Hi and ask how I was doing. My sincere condolences to his family.

Bill was a fellow fly fisherman and member of the Indianapolis Fly Casters. His great sense of humor and intelligence made him a wonderful fishing companion. Sincere coindolences to Sharon and family from all of Bill’s fishing buddies. He will be missed.
